PHEREC Technical Memorandum # 5
Start with the label. According to the label:
1 gallon of PERMANONE 30-30® contains 2.5 lbs of permethrin
1 gallon = 3.785 liters
1 pound (lb.) = 453.6 grams
2.5 lbs X 453.6 g/lb = 1,134 grams a.i./gal.
1,134/3.785 = 299 grams/liter
1 liter of PERMANONE 30-30® contains 299 grams of permethrin.
1 milliliter of PERMANONE 30-30® contains 0.299 grams of permethrin.
1 milliliter of PERMANONE 30-30® contains 299 milligrams of permethrin.
TAKE one (1) milliliter of PERMANONE 30-30® and, using a volumetric flask, dilute it to 100 ml FINAL VOLUME with A.C.S. acetone. [A.C.S. acetone is the grade of acetone approved by the American Chemical Society.] This is the STOCK solution.
The STOCK solution contains 2.99 milligrams/ml
TAKE 1.44 ml of the STOCK solution and dilute it to 100 ml FINAL VOLUME with A.C.S. acetone. This is the TEST solution.
2.99 milligrams/ml X 1.44ml= 4.3 milligrams of permethrin
4.3/100 = 0.043 milligrams/ml
This is equivalent to 43 micrograms/ml
The TEST solution contains 0.043 milligrams/ml permethrin
The TEST solution contains 43 micrograms/ml permethrin
USE 1 ml of the TEST solution in each bottle of the bioassay according to the protocol by Dukes, et al.
The procedure reported here was field tested at Indian River Mosquito Control District during the week August 27-29, 2002. I thank John Plate for assistance.
