FORMULATION OF MALATHION FOR BOTTLE BIOASSAY

PHEREC Technical Memorandum # 9

According to the LABEL:

1 gallon of FYFANON® ULV contains 9.9 lbs a.i.
1 gallon of ATRAPA® VCP contains 9.9 lbs a.i.

1 gallon = 3.785 liters
1 pound (lb.) = 453.6 grams

9.9 lbs X 453.6 g/lb = 4490.64 grams a.i./gal.
4490.64/3.785 = 1,186.4 grams/liter

1 liter of malathion contains 1,186.4 grams
1 milliliter of malathion contains 1.1864 grams
1 milliliter of malathion contains 1,186.4 milligrams

TAKE one (1) milliliter of malathion and, using a volumetric flask, dilute it to 100 ml FINAL VOLUME with A.C.S. acetone.   [A.C.S. acetone is the grade of acetone approved by the American Chemical Society.]  This is the STOCK solution.

The STOCK solution contains 11.864 milligrams/ml

TAKE 0.4 ml of the STOCK solution and dilute it to 10 ml FINAL VOLUME with A.C.S. acetone.  This is the TEST solution.

11.864 X 0.4 = 4.7456 milligrams/ml
4.7456/10 = 0.47456 milligrams/ml

The TEST solution contains 0.47456 milligrams/ml malathion
The TEST solution contains 474.56 micrograms/ml malathion

USE 1 ml of the TEST solution in each bottle of the Bioassay.
