On February 17, 2005 the Three Rivers Regional Science and Engineering
Fair honored local Middle and High School students for outstanding science projects.
Each year the John A. Mulrennan Sr., Public Health Entomology Research and Education
Center presents two Special Awards at this event for those projects that best exemplify
outstanding research on a topic focusing on arthropods. The Junior Division Award is
presented to a Middle School student while the Senior Division Award goes to a High School
student.
Dustin Shelley of Saint John the Evangelist was the recipient of the
Junior Division Award for his project entitled "Collateral Damage" which
investigated lady bug behavior.
Chuck Knowles of Bay High School was the recipient of the Senior Division
Award for his project "Spicy Ants: Fighting Fire with Fire" that investigated
the effects of capsicum on fire ants. Capsicum is the active ingredient in spicy hot
peppers such as cayenne.
Each award winner received a framed certificate and a fifty dollar United
States savings bond.
