| The Florida Department of
Agriculture & Consumer Services (DACS) Research Selection Committee met in Panama City
Beach, in conjunction with the Florida Mosquito Control Association Fall Conference, and
determined the final rankings of this years research proposals. The funding
announcement was made on November 16, 2000 by Tom Loyless, Chair, DACS Research Selection
Committee. Six research projects proposed by PHEREC scientists were chosen by the
committee for funding. In no particular order, here they are:
Nozzle Characterizations for Production of Mosquito Control Aerosols and Sprays Using
the Malvern Laser. James Dukes and Michael Greer. $37,443.
Monitoring Dermal Exposure of Mosquito Control Professionals Following Typical Handling
and Application Methods. He Zhong and Jack Petersen. $42,903.
Chronic Impact of Intermittent Methoprene Exposure to Fiddler Crabs in Brackish Water
Habitats. He Zhong. $26,054.
Replacement for the FMCA Nomadic Display Board. Eric Schreiber and Kellie Etherson.
$1,327.
Evaluation of Mosquito Magnet as a Trap-Out Method for Controlling Adult
Biting Gnats in Florida. James Cilek. $12,225.
Mosquito Repellent Evaluations in Outdoor Cages. Jack Petersen, Tom Floore and John
Smith. $9,079.
These six proposals totaled $129,031 which represents approximately half of the
$250,000 appropriated by DACS for research funding.
